• Hello all you helpful creatures,

I haven’t used WordPress before, and before I install it, I want to know whether it can do what I want it to. I want to use WP to publish what you might call an online magazine.

Every issue will be located *entirely on the main page of the site*. Every issue will have four short articles of around 200 words in four boxes on the main page, and every week will be a new edition, with four new articles.

I’ve poorly mocked-up an image of what I have in mind (the real design will be much prettier I assure you!)

Is there a way to group articles into “issues” using WP, so that I can dynamically create pages for “issue 1”, “issue 2” etc? Is this sort of thing easy?

    Thanks so much,
    -conn

  • Hmmm I imagine “issue” could act as an archive of some sort. Like, instead of March’s archives it could be Issue 1, etc… I’d definitely say it’s possible.

Maybe use a layout like this one – https://www.wpthemesfree.com/view.php?theme_id=249

There are a number of magazine style themes here that you could either use or use as inspiration https://www.noupe.com/wordpress/outstanding-free-and-premium-wordpress-themes.html

    Thankees so much.
Will give them a shot and post the results after I get it working (which might be a while, considering my skill level)…

As far as I know, there aren’t any themes that really have this functionality built in.

It’s something I’m considering doing once things settle down a bit with my custom work.

The way you use categories and tags will definitely play a role in this. I think WordPress 2.5 has a way for you to generate your own taxonomy. For example, I think you can build a taxonomy system for “issue” if you didn’t want to use categories or tags for this. So, Issue 2 would be located at yoursite/issue/2.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong on the taxonomy thing. I haven’t actually seen this implemented anywhere yet.
