Magic number of plugins and trouble with server load?

  • I would like to know if there is any article or a guide with the instructions and precautions to take if we use several plugins on a WordPress installation

    There were several articles which warn us to use ‘as less plugins as’ necessary. There are many articles which suggest 7 plugins is the best and 10 plugins are more. But I can’t just adjust with that.

    The experts like @andrea_r says there is no magic number for plugins and we can use any number of plugins if we really need them. I agree with her . She also suggests that the plugins should be well coded and WP installation should use a good web host

    But every one believe that Magic Number. MultiSite and BuddyPress installation may need several plugins. There is no meaning in believing 7 or 10 magic number in that kind of installation type.

    I would like to hear others experiences and suggestions in this matter. Users who use Multisite are greatly appreciated

    Not everyone believes in that Magic Number. Andrea doesn’t (I don’t).

    Obviously the fewer plugins you use, the less strain you put on your server and the faster it’ll run. But there’s no special formula. Use as many as you need.

    Numbers don’t matter in the slightest. I am currently running 51 active plugins on one of my sites. Yes, fifty-one. Not a typo.

    Complexity matters. If the plugin is simple, or only affects one small place in the code, or just makes one little change to how things work, then it doesn’t add any appreciable load at all. You can pretty much run as many “simple” plugins as you like without any impact whatsoever.

    The 51st plugin is what I call “Random Fixes” and it’s where I put custom code I write for each site.

    Otto, thanks for sharing your list. Will be checking some of which I’ve never seen before ?? Cheers.

    As for multisite installs, usually I combine some simple plugins into one and upload to mu-plugins folder. Just have to remember to check plugin/s in mu-plugins out when upgrading for possible conflicts.
