mail to open in new tab

My problem with the advanced setting to convert plain emails to mailto links is that the link opens in the same tab. I need the link to open in a new tab.
I tried not selecting the Email Encoder plug in option for mailto, and instead created hyperlink and selected open in new tab. This did not work either, it errored. Had to be because of plugin, because mailto links opened in new tab prior to plugin.
