I recommend the free WPBruiser plugin. You can search for it under Plugins > Add new.

After activating the WPBruiser plugin you need to go to the WBBruiser settings, there you click on the Other tab and there you can check the box for the Mailchimp for WP spam protection.

Hope that helps. If you have any questions, please let me know!

@lap Thanks, I had previously searched for it in the plugins but the last update was 1 year ago and it is untested with my WordPress version. Any suggestions?

I can confirm that it’s still safe to use and still works properly even though it’s not updated since awhile now

Thank you, I will give it a go.

@lap I did implement your suggestions checking the WP spam protection box but the registrations continue prolificly.

Any other suggestions would be welcome.
    Thanks!

Are you sure the spam sign ups are coming in through our form? Maybe there is another subscription option on your account?

And of course make 100% sure the right checkbox is checked in WpBruiser, for the Mailchimp for WordPress forms…

I suppose we have to find a replacement for WpBruiser at some point anyway as the developer has been MIA for awhile now. Sadly, because it’s a great plugin!

We are also getting hit by a bunch of spam sign-ups. How safe do you think WpBruiser would be going into the future, considering it hasn’t been updated for a year? I’m hesitant to install it on our WP site, if some WP update might end up breaking it and maybe the functionality of the MC4WP sign-up form.

For now the use of WpBruiser seems safe, I’m more worried that at some point it will not be compatible with the latest WordPress, and also that more and more spammers find ways around the protection over time…

We are looking into making our own captcha solution (again) for MC4WP.

If WpBruiser becomes incompatible with some future version WordPress, what would you expect the worst that would happen would be? Would the MC4WP continue to work, but WpBruiser just wouldn’t do anything? Or does the integration of the two mean it could disable MC4WP from working, as well?

It’s impossible to give a straight forward answer to this as we do not know how exactly it would be incompatible with a future wordpress version. I don’t expect any issues but theoretically anything can break.
