MailChip Unhandled "Fake Email" Exception

I am getting a white page that states “This email address looks fake or invalid. Please enter a real email address” when users checkout with an invalid email. From searching it looks like the error is the result of an unhandled MailChimp exception. The user is still charged and the membership is still created. Is there any way to either make it so that the user is returned to the checkout page with a proper validation message or allowed to checkout and the error suppressed so the user does not see it? Thanks.
