Mailpoet – cUrl timeout 5000 milliseconds

I’ve been struggling to resolve this timeout issue for a few weeks now. I’ve increased the curl timeout in 3 or 4 different ways, tried alternate cron configurations, plugins, wp-config settings … everything I can find. Still stuck with the same message:

cURL error 28: Connection timed out after 5000 milliseconds

Anything else I can try here? I’m stumped.
