Hello, I am writing about a problem I keep running into with regard the newsletter on mailpoet. Every time I shorten the link to the newsletter, it directs back to my site and not to the actual newsletter. This means that I cannot share the newsletter on social media. This was no problem in the past. Please advise. I appreciate it.

    Hi there @thegv2020,

Just to confirm, when you say “every time I shorten the link to the newsletter”, are you referring to using some URL shortener service?

For the newsletter URLs, they contain that “data” attribute at the end which the mailpoet_router function uses to figure out which specific newsletter the URL is pointing to. For other URLs in sent newsletters, that data would also include information for finding the associated subscriber, and the specific link, etc.

Without the correct/exact data attribute there, any URLs going through that mailpoet_router function would not work, and would likely just redirect to your homepage, as you are seeing occur.

For whichever method you are using to shorten your links, you would need to make sure they are preserving the entire data attribute and all other attributes in the URL — not just the main domain/slug to your site.

Hi there, and thanks for getting back to me on this. Is there any way around this – I mean is there a way I can shorten the link in order to use in Facebook etc?

    Hi there @thegv2020,

I just tried copying a newsletter URL from my site into the field on the homepage of https://bitly.com/ , and the shortened URL worked when I pasted it in my browser.

I guess it would depend on the specific service you were using for shortening the URL, and whether it preserves all the attributes in the original URL.

Aside from that though, there’s no built-in “shortener” option in MailPoet itself — on the site, the full URL with attribute would be required to load the correct newsletter.

Hi and many thanks. I get that and yes, I found the shortened URL only has problems on Facebook and in Instagram stories. I’ve tried shortening with other services and get the same. Unfortunately, the initial URL with all the attributes is massively long.

    Hey again!

I wish that there was a simple way to have this work on Facebook, but I (unfortuntately) don’t think that there is a way to get it to work with Facebook like you are wanting ??

Thanks. I wish there was. I never had this problem with Mailpoet a few years back. Actually, I’d insert the newsletter link and would have the photo of the newsletter come up in Facebook. Now id doesn’t do that anymore which is why I add the link and photos myself.

Hello again. Back to the same problem. Released my newsletter this week and trying to share on Facebook. Although I took your advice and did not shorten the Link (url) but instead used the whole thing, it directs back to the main page of my website and not to the newsletter. Please advise me as there is no point in having a newsletter that you cannot share.
