Major, Fatal Error and Conflict with WooCommerce (8.5.1) and Stripe Gateway Plugin (7.9.0).

After updating to the latest version of WooCommerce, we were immediately met with a major fatal error anytime we attempted to update or edit a customer within the dashboard area of wp-admin.

It doesn’t matter what data you’re attempting to update, because upon clicking “update user” in the /wp-admin/user-edit.php area, if you’re running WooCommerce’s own Stripe Gateway plugin activated, it will produce a fatal error.

After a few hours of tedious troubleshooting, we ended up spotting the issue: it’s WooCommerce’s own Stripe Gateway plugin. We confirmed this by running with zero other plugins activated, leaving only WooCommerce and the Stripe Gateway plugin as the only active plugins on a Twenty Twenty-Four theme.

We’re long-time WooCommerce users and use multiple paid WooCommerce plugins, including subscriptions and memberships, etc. But I have to say, where in the heck is the quality control as of lately? You’d think that this would have been spotted before releasing it.

This needs to be resolved ASAP. Countless people are using WooCommerce alongside WooCommerce’s Stripe payment gateway.

  • I encountered the issue, too. Massive fatal issues resulting in complete shutout from my site. Everything from images to wordpress pages in the dashboard and everywhere else – website was dead in the water.
I had to uninstall everything related to woocommerce and then revert back to 8.4. I purchased an extension this morning and got a refund because this issue was a catastrophic fail.

It was not a plugin conflict.
It was not a .htaccess issue.
It was not a permissions issue in the file manager.

It was not anything other than something incredibly wrong with the update. It most likely introduced a fatal flaw to the database.

Make sure you back up your site and understand how to revert things from cPanel before installing this very wrong update.

I’ll be looking for another resource for my store as I cannot trust Woocommerce.

Downgrading to WooCommerce 8.4.0 also fixed my issues. I was getting 403 forbidden errors on my site. The issue started today after updating to 8.5.1. I tried resetting file permissions, deactivating plugins, clearing cache… nothing worked.

Same here getting 403 forbidden error with Woo + BuddyBoss theme. All worked when downgrading and clearing the cookies. Fetal error when enabling debug mode for inspection.

Same here again, happened on the last update too rolled back via the server and left it the update disappeared after a day, today new update same again. site goes to 403 Forbidden

Our cousumers start to encounter the similar message “fatal error with the site” when they go to check page. And we temporality retore to 8.4.0 then the site work well again. Waiting for the issue fixed.

Hey everyone! Thanks for reporting this.

Can you please confirm if you have the?Order Attribution feature?set to?enabled?and, you also have Web Application Firewall (WAF) rules set up in your hosting configuration?

There’s a known issue on 8.5.1 which we are currently looking into.

If this does apply to you, please check our blog post as we have links there to help you.

If this does not apply to you, please let us know so we can investigate this further.

What is frustrating is that often when there is a support response (See @carolm29’s response above) is that support doesn’t even address the issue at hand. My first and opening post on this specific thread had NOTHING to do with 403 errors – it had to do with critical fatal errors being produced by Woo’s own Stripe plugin. It seems that Woo quietly updated this literally only 2 hours ago, and told no one about it and didn’t even bother making a blog post about it, even though half of the critical errors that were being produced were indeed being caused by that issue.

So incredibly frustrating. Personally, I wouldn’t update to 8.5+ until they get all of the other bugs worked out. According to many others, they threw in a bunch of bloated stuff in this latest version. Eager to advance woo without paying attention to quality control. Quality control seems to be the issue with most things today in society.

@carolm29 When you say “have the?Order Attribution feature?set to?enabled,” do you mean the “Order Data storage” option? This is what I see when I go to WooCommerce -> Settings -> Advanced -> Features.

    Hi @saltykey @cooktec @flowsheff @modernartbykj,

Sorry to hear that the WooCommerce 8.5.1 update caused issues.

We have received reports about WooCommerce 8.5.1’s incompatibility with the Stripe extension (version 7.9.0)  and Woo Subscriptions 5.9.0, which causes this fatal error when updating the customer profile:

PHP Fatal error: Uncaught Error: Call to undefined function wc_add_notice()

The issue had already been fixed in Stripe 7.9.1 and Woo Subscriptions 5.9.1which was released yesterday and today respectively.

Please update WooCommerce as well as the above extensions (if you have any of them) and the error should be resolved.

Let us know how it goes!

Dear @sandipmondal , Although I don’t have Stripe and Woo Subscription extension, I try update to WooCommerce 8.5.1 again, now it works well. Anyway, thank for the instant reply and assistance.
