    Hello,

I have an active Multisite install that is working perfectly. WordPress and all plugins are up to date.

I am just completing a new site in my Multisite install (appearing in a folder, as they all do) and it turns out that we would like it to appear on a separate domain that we own and which is currently not used at all.

I figure I have two possibly 3 options:

    a) use the not-recently-updated WordPress MU Domain Mapping plugin to accomplish this.

    b) do a full backup of the site using BackWPup Pro (which I have and use regularly), install WordPress on the new domain, and restore from the backup to the new install. I assume that even if it’s going to just be one site, I’d have to set up WordPress on the new domain with Multisite enabled.

    c) Use WP Multi Network. Unfortunately from the documentation I have seen I am not sure this will do the trick, and how to proceed.

I would really appreciate advice, links, or other suggestions!

Update: I noticed the following post – https://halfelf.org/2014/mapping-domains-without-plugin/

…which suggests that if I map the new domain to the current server and then make the small adjustments in the multisite config for that site everything will just work.

Is this correct? As I mentioned before there is nothing “on” the other domain at the moment, so this shouldn’t be an issue.

I’ve worked with Multisite for years, but, sadly, I don’t have any experience with Domain Mapping.

Would it be easier/feasible to export the new site and install it on the separate domain on a single installation of WordPress?

Hey Dan thanks for the reply.

What you suggest is an option but it’s really a last-chance kind of thing because it will be extremely time-consuming with a lot of picky re-development work involved, at least in my experience.

I hope to hear from someone with a little more experience before I do my trials.

For the record, I went ahead and tried this on a test site in the same multisite install: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/howto-domain-mapping-without-a-plugin-instructions

And it worked perfectly, nothing broke whatsoever.

It’s a real shame that there’s so much out-of-date info about this subject, because the solution is dead simple, requires no plugins or new config files, and can be applied to an existing site with very little chance of breakage.
