Make carousel available without the entire gallery appearing?

Is there a way to use a single image to link to a carousel?

I’ve created a gallery, and when someone clicks o an image they get the carousel. But I don’t want all the images to appear in the post, but I want the carousel available. Here’s an example: https://www5.uwm.edu/news/?p=12431

To put it another way, I’d like a single image to show up in the post, and when it’s clicked on, a 5-image carousel loads up.

Can this be done?
