Make Featured Images Proportional instead of Cropped

    I’m using the Twenty Fifteen Theme, it seems the only way I can have proportional featured images is by editing the code in functions.php, which I have done. However, this is obviously not ideal, as I’ll have to edit that code with each theme update.
    Under Settings/Media, I do not have the option to crop thumbnails to exact dimensions checked, so I’m not sure why I’m still getting cropped featured images for new posts. Any help with this greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • You should make changes in a child theme, so that the parent theme can update without affecting your changes.
    The treatment of the featured image is entirely up to the theme. The Settings > Media > crop option is for images in general, not for featured images.
    If you don’t like how your theme handles featured images, you can switch themes.
