Making a page without making it a ‘Page’

Hi, I’m new to WordPress, and have been searching for this answer as well. Thanks for the info above.

However, I understand this tag is used to exclude certain pages. Is that the only way? I’m wanting to only show the parent pages on my nav list, but not the child pages. Is there a way to do that in one fell swoop, or do I have to go in and exclude each child by number? I was hoping for a plugin or something…..
