Making a theme respect ‘sticky’ posts

I’m using News Magazine Theme 640 for a particular blog and I have to say its perfect for the job – the ‘magazine’ style layout is exactly what I was looking for. It’s not all good though – I’ve spent an age modifying parts of the theme, but still have one particular problem.
Each Category which is fed to the theme’s front page display the most recent post (and picture) in that category, regardless of whether I select ‘sticky’ in the post editor or not. This is a bit tiresome because I keep having to edit the date of the post in each category that I want to stay on the index page to make it the most recent. How can I teach my theme to respect sticky posts?
