    Hi,
    Yes, they are needed to make sure the appropriate image is downloaded (there is no need to download 512px avatar, when, for example, just 48px is needed). So you have to place the files in all folders to make sure it works correctly. If you don’t want to have different sizes, you can just place the same file in every directory, but if the file is too big that would be just unnecessary use of your server resources.

    Please keep in mind that plugin update will remove your avatars, so always keep a backup copy. This plugin was not written to be extendable, it’s more of a plug and play solution to add colorful avatars to your site and forget about it. I am considering creating advanced avatar plugin that would be highly customizable by the user, but currently I don’t have enough time to start working on it.
