Recently WordFence alerted us to a ‘malicious file’ found in one of our websites:

    wp-content/plugins/wordfence/css/images/core.cache.php
    Type: File

    …and to an ‘Unknown File’:

Unknown file in WordPress core: wp-includes/default.php
    Type: File

We contacted our host (FutureHosting) who ran a malware scan on their end, and determined there seems to be no malicious presence on our website.

Yet we are of course very concerned about WordFence’s alert, especially since we didn’t change or update any plugin or file when the alert took place, and are now wondering how to proceed.

Could this be a false alarm? Can the files be deleted safely? What would be a good next step to take in such situation?
