Manage 301’s

Phoenix Media Rename doesn’t create any redirection, it only updates posts (both standard and custom posts) to change the old filename with the new one.

It can be a good idea to add a redirection, this will help search engines update image indexing.

I prefer not to add a redirection functionality to Phoenix Media Rename, because that would mean adding a frontend feature and would create problems if some user disables Phoenix Media Rename, but I can try to cooperate with some free redirection plugin.

I will release version 3.3.0 in a few hours (I’m completing the pre-release tests).

The new version adds the capability to create a 301 redirection when you rename a media file, but only if you have the (free) plugin Redirection installed.

Please note: the option to create redirections is disabled by default: you need to enable it in the Phoenix Media Rename settings.

you only need to install Redirection and enable the option in Phoenix Media Rename settings, everything else will be made automatically by the plugin ??

The redirection will be added to Redirection list, you can find more information on Redirection’s home page: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/redirection/

The SEO benefit is not direct: if you have a file with a good SEO ranking, renaming the file will cause the indexed URL to fall in a 404 error, so the search engines will remove the file from their index and add the new one with a new SEO ranking.

Adding a 301 redirection will notify the search engines of the change in the URL, this way the search engines will update their index and pass the old SEO ranking to the new URL.

Please can you verify if the below statement is true:

When I edit the filename to be SEO-friendly, I have the option to set up a 301 redirect to notify the search engines the location of the image has changed.

To automatically create a 301 redirect when a filename is changed:
Settings > Phoenix Media Rename > [scroll to the bottom and select]
Create 301 redirection > and then Hit “Save”

A 301 redirect passes the SEO juice from the old image filename to the new one.

A 301 redirect is a crucial step, if the filename is being improved, for example, “unlocked-podcast-icon” to “unlocked-podcast-by-matt-landau-logo” or “logo” to “vrmb-logo”.

Whether I do or do not set up a 301 redirect, WordPress will display the correct image because the platform pulls from a unique image ID in WordPress.

QUESTION: Can I delete the redirect? For example, when I have a redirect conflict. If so, where can I delete it?

you can edit or delete redirection from Redirection’s plugin settings (<your site>/wp-admin/tools.php?page=redirection.php).

Your previous statement is correct, but this sentence needs to be clarified: “Whether I do or do not set up a 301 redirect, WordPress will display the correct image because the platform pulls from a unique image ID in WordPress.”

The correct sentence is:
Without 301 redirect, WordPress will display the correct image if it is placed in a page or any other kind of post, any direct access to the old image’s URL will result in a 404 error.
