• Some months ago, I built a site on a domain which had previously been owned by someone else.

The previous owner built a lot of dynamic pages which still remain in the Google index. They now resolve to my custom 404 page – but there is nothing to tell the SE that these pages should no longer be indexed. Obviously I do want a 404 page for my visitors who try to find something in error. But how do I get rid of all those junk pages that won’t go away and appear in the search results?

Well. How do they resolve to the 404 page? If it’s WordPress’s automatic catcher, you’re fine. But. I would consider making a dynamic 301 redirect in .htaccess to shunt them off to more useful places.
