Managing stock at the variant level

    Hey. I manage many of my products at the variant level. In the past, this has been done with my POS software and synced to WC for online sales. However, I no longer have the bricks and mortar shop or the software. I want to manage stock levels at the variant level using WC only.

    That’s pretty easy to do; select ‘manage stock?’ in the variant tab, but what I can’t figure out is if I need to also select ‘Track stock quantity for this product’ in the inventory tab. I don’t ever want to know how many total I have, just how many of each variant.

    I also want to know how to do that in bulk. I have read https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/turn-on-stock-management-at-variation-level-in-bulk/ It seems to answer both questions. But as the person who asked the question, I’m having problems following it.

    In step 4, I can find ‘Manage stock?’ with a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ option (which I presume is what I want). But I can’t find what they are talking about in step 5.

    After checking the rest of the thread, I was able to confirm that the steps were in fact incorrect, we apologize for that.

    On the same thread, another colleague addressed this and shared other options to bulk edit the products, have you tried them yet? Let me paste them here to make it easier to see them in case you haven’t checked them out yet.

    One option is to export all products on your site using the built-in Product CSV Importer and Exporter. From the CSV file, you can filter the variations and update the Stock Quantity column.

    Another option would be to use the premium plugin Bulk Edit Products, Prices, and Attributes to easily bulk edit any WooCommerce product fields and meta values.

    Thanks for the reply. I’m not asking how to set the quantity of each variant (I can and do use CSVs a lot). What I want to do is set up my variant products correctly without going into each (hundreds) and selecting the correct settings.

    Since the method shown wasn’t correct, can I do this via CSV import too? If so, what settings should I have (in the spreadsheet) for the variable products?

    Absolutely! The Product CSV Import Suite extension will be needed for that, as product variation details need to be edited in bulk.

    Thanks, I eventually found the column I need ‘manage stock?’

    I noticed that this column didn’t export for variations. Before making a possible mess, I want to know if I can add that column for variations. I think most of my products are correctly set, but I don’t fancy checking 1300 variations.

    Also, is there a reason I couldn’t have done this from the included CSV import/export process? i.e. why was the extension needed?

    Yes, you can definitely add the ‘manage stock?’ column to your variations in the CSV file. This will allow you to manage stock for each variant without having to check them individually. Just make sure that the column is correctly labelled and that the data is formatted correctly to avoid any issues during the import process.

    The reason why the Product CSV Import Suite extension is needed is because it provides more advanced features compared to the included CSV import/export process. It allows you to import all types of products, including variations and gives you more control over the import process. For example, you can choose to update existing products, skip new products, or even delete products that are not present in your CSV file.
