• I deleted the WP-DB-Backup plugin from my plugins directory this afternoon and instantly broke our site. Since then it’s been returning either an Internal Server Error 500 or an Error Connecting to Database.

I tried dragging over a version of the WP-DB-Backup plugin folder from several weeks ago in my FTP client without any luck. It’s not our MySQL database; another site using the same database is up and our Host confirms the problem is somewhere in the directory files.

I can’t get to the Admin area of the site, obviously. Should I try uploading a clean install of the plugin? I hadn’t even configured it yet so I won’t lose any backups from there. Need advice desperately, we’ve been down for 5 hours now.

  • You need to look elsewhere for the cause of your problem. Deleting my WP-DB-Backup plugin would not affect the blog at all (except that the plugin would cease to work, obviously).

Probably you deleted something else, changed file permissions, modified your .htaccess file with non-allowed rules, or the like.

Your host should be able to give you a more-specific error message than that.

I didn’t change file permissions, nor did I muck around in the .htaccess file. The last thing I was doing before the site crash at 3:30 was editing the template’s sidebar.php and functions.php files in an attempt to restore a javascript ad. It’s possible that your plugin just happened to issue a backup at the same time making it look like the culprit when it was actually doing its job.

Since you’re so responsive, could I prevail upon your expertise to answer an amateur’s question even if it’s not related to your plugin? When would editing those two files return an Error Connecting to Database message? I’ve just tried uploading a clean version of the theme folder without any change…

    Many thanks.

When would editing those two files return an Error Connecting to Database message?

It wouldn’t. You would see that if the connection data in your wp-config.php file is wrong or if the database server has gone down or is otherwise unavailable.

The two error messages you mention are probably easily cleared up by your host, which would be able to check the logs to see what’s causing them, and that’s going to be the fastest way to fix your problems. Verify that your wp-config.php file info is correct, and then talk to your host to find out what’s going on.
