Manual Image Optimization w/o Plugin?

Hi, I was wondering how you would go about running through the entire wp-content/uploads directory and performing a one time image optimization on everything without using a plugin? I am on a mac, and see there is a program called https://imageoptim.com/mac, am wondering if this could be as simple as just downloading the entire uploads directory and running it through that, and then re-uploading, overwriting everything or if that could cause a bunch of problems?
