• I tried the automatic updated and it failed due to some sort of permission problem with a file

so I did an manual update to 3.8
oh yes, wordpress is installed in a folder dev

the website front end is fully functional after the update
but when I try to access the admin panel
    example.com/dev/wp-login.php
    a http 404 error appears
    then if I try
    example.com/dev/wp-admin/
I end up with ‘nothing found’ message from wordpress
as if I did a search in wordpress and could not find anything

everything was working fine before the upgrade attempts
I checked with ftp and the file is there
I deleted my browser temp cache and cookies
    with the same results

    any guidance?
