The automatic update failed and I am trying to do it manually.

I don’t understand one thing in the instructions for manual update. https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Updating_WordPress#Manual_Update It says in Step 1:4 ‘Delete the old wp-includes and wp-admin directories on your web host’ and then in Step 1:5 ‘upload the new wp-includes and wp-admin directories to your web host, overwriting old files’.

I would have thought that deleting the directories would also delete the files within them, in which case one would not be overwriting them.

    Could someone explain? Thanks, Andrew

Its just saying to make sure the old files are somehow replaced by the new ones – whether you overwrite them or replace them entirely is up to you. Take a backup first, though.

I have updated this codex page to read more naturally. Please let me know if this makes it more understandable for yourself and future users.

Thanks very much, dauidus, that’s clear to me now.
