• Hi,

    I have a Multisite running with 6 sites. It’s currently running WordPress v3.9.6 and I want to bring it up to date to 4.2.2.

    I’m very nervous about just using the Automatic update, as there’s no easy way back if there’s any issues, so I’d prefer to do it FTP manually (with backups etc on hand). However, I can’t find any instructions on how to manually update MU.

    a. Can anyone advise?
    b. Any expected issues going from v3.9.6 -> V4.2.2 ?

    Thanks.

    Sal.

  • You can make a backup of all your sites including database and then try the WordPress automatic update and if something goes wrong (which is not always the case) you can roll back to previous version by extracting your backup to your WP installation directory.
    Otherwise you can do the opposite, extract the new WP version and override it with old one in the same directory (folder).
    Note: deactivate all plugins before manually updating WP as they may cause problems after a “huge” update.
    Good luck!

    Thanks,B13story.

    One thing that worried me about the automatic update was the but where the database needed to be updated after WP files had been updated (click button stage). If I did an automatic update and then clicked to update the database could i still revert back to old version at that stage?

    @sallymoos: That’s why you would want to have a backup of your database on hand. If necessary, you could drop all the tables of the updated database and import the backup to restore.
