Many errors on a short post

The plugin will scan the whole page to check for accessibility issues. The heading order goes from an H1 for the title to an H3 used for the comments title. It’s not finding an H2 in between. The 28 other links that open in a new window are in the testimonial slider in the sidebar. That is why that warning is showing on every post. That makes so much sense … I have mixed feelings about the whole page vs. just the post / page. You’re not seeing the entire page when working on the post / page in WordPress or another CMS. But I know you need some way to view problems because most of the time you can’t see the whole page in a CMS. And there is no need for H2 in short posts. Not good. Comments as H3 is WP default — I haven’t touched it. Wonder if it needs to be H2?

The heading order would be flagged by WAVE as well (they call it Skipped heading level and it’s an “alert”) with that tool.

It is a little frustrating because it’s not “easily” changed because the heading level for your comments heading is controlled by your theme rather than something you put in the editor, however that differentiation doesn’t mean anything to screen reader users who’re seeing the whole page on the front end. ??

The correct course of action would be to change this heading to an H2 – this is correct even on a longer post that has H2s on it already, because in the “outline format” of a blog post, it makes sense for your comments to be nested below the post title, not the last H2 heading that happens to be on the page.

We have an article, What to do if There are Accessibility Errors in Your Theme, that might be helpful for you. Basically, the options are to correct this in the theme or reach out to the theme developer to correct it.

Steve, I checked the testimonials — they do not open in a new window. It stays in the same window … regardless if you click a link or Next / Previous. Is this a bug?

P.S. Thinking it over — I think it’s smart to evaluate the whole page not just the post. That way if you add new components on your page, you know if something needs fixing.

Yes, you are correct the testimonials do not open in a new tab. The HTML when you view the source of the page the link do have the target=”_blank” attribute value but there must be some javascript that then removes that once the page is loaded in the browser. The Accessibility Checker plugin doesn’t currently take into account javascript manipulations on the page.

Since you’ve manually confirmed the links do not open in a new window, I think it’s safe to mark those issues as ignored.
