Many new orders are coming in as Failed but then immediatly change to Processing

We have had many orders recently that come in as “Pending” and then change to “Failed” and then change to “Processing”. This all happens either in the same minute or within a minute of each other.
I did my own test and I do believe I know why this is happening:
– if I enter the incorrect credit card information (so the card is declined), a new “failed” order is created
– if I try to checkout again (even after refreshing the checkout page), and put in the correct credit card information, it processes the payment … and instead of creating a new order, it updates the existing “failed” order
Is there a way to prevent it from creating “failed” orders?
