Mapping a Site – what URL?

I’m not clear on the option “Update siteurl and home as well.

That’s generally a SINGLE site command. You don’t do it for MultiSite. Without a link to the walkthrough, I can’t tell you any more.

I have also noticed that in my main Sites dashboard, there is an inconsistency as to how the links to the child site dashboards are being displayed. One shows the “mapped” url, while the other does not. i.e. one shows, siteone.com/wp-admin/, while the other shows sitetwo.parent.com/wp-admin/.

Most likely you didn’t check the box to use the mapped domain for wp-admin stuff. But that’s a bit different depending on WHICH domain mapping plugin you’re using ?? Which is a hint for you to LINK to the one you’re using. Too many have similar names ??

OK…I’ve done some learning through trial and error. It appears that the walkthrough I was reading noted to UNCHECK the “Update siteurl and home as well”, so that the site URL was not changed throughout the admin of the site. To me this looks like something that could be more of a “housekeeping” issue, in terms of how you want your Domain name listed in your Sites admin. It does appear that it could cause myself some confusion, in using this method, however.

I’m using WordPress MU Domain Mapping plugin, but the issue I was seeing was not tied to the plugin. I found that if I rename the Sites>Edit(specific site)>Info and then insert the direct URL, i.e. siteone.com, this is then shown in the wp-admin link.

Well. Don’t do that ?? You’ll break your site! That’s why we have the plugins to do that for you!

are you following that link because its specific to media temple? If so:

a) its slightly outdated

b) you can look at other tutes (or even ebooks that cover this) that will show how to map domains within WP itself.

the only MT specific parts are directing the domain name on your host. Otherwise, in WP the process is the same on ANY host.

Yes, you should assume that. THere’s a paid plugin that does change this for you tho. But it also remembers the previous name for UNmapping sites.

I initially followed it because I use MT – although I understand that the only specific item involved the Symbolic Link, within MT’s domain directory, now that I’ve got my feet wet.

I won’t edit the name of the domain.
