I run a WPMultisite, and Yesterday, my site started returning 404 errors on every post on all of my subsites. The front pages are there, and pages linked to the menus are also there, but not a single post is able to pull in, even though I can see them on the backend. The main site, https://pnrnetworks.com, is working fine on all levels, possibly because it’s got Elementor installed on it. All of the front pages of the subsites pull up without a problem, but every post link is returning a 404 message. I installed a plug in on Friday night, and that might have something to do with it, so I uninstalled and deleted that plug in, but the errors are still happening. I talked to my ISP and at the time (yesterday afternoon) pages were still visible when using Google Chrome, but not when using Firefox. I tried to post a test page to see if I could trace the issues, but it won’t post, and after I tried, the 404 errors also started on Google Chrome. The site was working FINE on Friday afternoon, when I made my last post, but something between the time I posted that article and Saturday morning, something went completely wonky. I checked the permalink hierarchy and it looks correct. But something happened, and now I need help to figure out what went wrong so I can get it fixed – I’ve checked everything I can think of, and nothing I’ve tried has worked. I would greatly appreciate any help or observations people could offer up to help me out, thanks!

For some reason the query WP decided to use isn’t returning any data. Eliminate plugin or theme influence by deactivating all plugins and switching to twenty twenty-one theme. If you still have trouble, install and activate the Query Monitor plugin. Check the SQL used for the main query after getting a 404 response. Something about it is causing mySQL to not find anything.

You may post the resulting SQL here if you cannot determine the issue yourself. Maybe someone else will be able to spot the problem.

OK, over the last few days, I’ve deactivated all the master plug ins and all the plugins on one of the sites, eCinemaOne, to see if I can get anything to work. However, after deactivating everything, when I try to install Twenty Twenty One theme, ALL the links and ALL the articles disappear. The only ones left are outside links that were still working in the first place. So I haven’t yet installed Query Monitor because there are no active links left on the site to query. I’m not sure what the next step to try might be, so if someone could point me in the right direction, I’d appreciate it. I’ve never run into this complex of an issue before, and I am completely baffled as to how to resolve it. Thanks for the suggestions so far, hopefully we can get to the bottom of this soon…

OK, having just checked out the main subsite from the front end, the links are working again there with the plug ins removed. The other sites are still down and having the issue though, so I definitely think it’s a plug in issue somewhere. Now I just need to find out which one it is. Just a progress report, but I may be able to figure this out now…

OK, I have deactivated all the plug-ins from the four main subsites on my full site. This has fixed two of the subsites, https://ecinemaone.pnrnetworks.com and https://ecinemaboston.pnrnetworks.com. However, two other subsites are still getting the 404 errors, https://thekirkhamreport.pnrnetworks.com and https://ringaroundtherosie.pnrnetworks.com. So obviously, this is not completely plug-in related as I’d hoped. I had hoped they would all work and I could track down the common plug-ins and eliminate them completely, but that’s not going to work now. So I’m at a crossroads again, and any advice or direction someone can provide would be much appreciated, thank you!

It could simply be mismatched rewrite rules due to plugin removal. Visiting the permalinks settings screen will cause them to be regenerated. You needn’t change or save anything, loading the screen is enough.

If that doesn’t help, you also have all sites switched over to twenty twenty-one, right? Just double checking, we often neglect to remember themes can wreak havoc as well.

The home pages seem to work, but not the post permalinks. I think it’s back to Query Monitor to further investigate those 404s.
