• ALoha,

My client has 4200 images in a folder. I know its crazy but he wont stop from doing that. Well now it wont take anymore files as the uploader wont allow more images unless some are deleted. Now I called the hosting company and they told me that there is no limit but something is going on.

How can I upload images into a different folder without breaking the site? Or how do I make it so that it can handle as many images as I want?

    Thanks!

  • There is a limit on the number of files in one folder. I can’t remember what it was off the top of my head (I’m sure someone else out there iwll know though!) but I know for sure that it’s a real limit as I’ve hit it before in a previous custom-built system that did the same thing. Ended up with 1,000’s of image files in a single folder, then wouldn’t write any more because there’s no more file “places” available.

There’s a lot of ways to resolve this, but they pretty much all come down to organising the files into separate folders in some way. WordPress does that in the media library by months by default (/2015-10/, /2015-11/) but you can have the folders named anything that you want to.

As for making the uploader do that, unless you’re using the standard WordPress uploader, you’ll need to ask who ever wrote the uploading code or check out their documentation to see what settings are there for doing this. Without knowing what we are wowking with, it’s pretty much impossible to give any ideas on how to fix things.
