I am thinking of creating lots of roles, that is like looking at minimum 2000 roles. Under that sort of circumstances, would the plugin slow down the site ? It is a online education portal and we are thinking of restricting posts based on user role to differentiate different courses/lessons. Appreciated for any input. Thanks.

There are Web/DB servers memory and productivity limits only.

But take into account that WordPress and “User Role Editor” user interface is not suitable for so large quant of roles.

    1) When you open “Users” list you see roles tabs at the top. WordPress counts users by roles and offers ‘filtering by role via tab’ feature.
So imagine that every time you try to open Users list WP will execute time consuming query to count how many users are at every role, and built/show HTML with 2000 tabs at the top of users list.

    2) WP and User Role Editor use simple drop-down list to show/select a roles at the different places. Drop-down selection list is not a thing there we will be glad to see 2000 items to select from, right?

So it’s seems you need to think about other solution with lower quant of roles or solution which will exclude from use the users by roles tabs and roles drop-down lists without AJAX filtering.
