I’ve been really happy with the usefulness of this plugin.

Recently, I’ve had some trouble with large PNGs (in the 2MB size range) failing during the conversion process. OptiPNG runs at full tilt for 30 seconds or so then finally times out. I’ve got it set to Level 2: 8 Trials.

I’m wondering if it would be useful to add a setting specifying the maximum file size for each conversion type. I really don’t want to give up on optimizing PNGs, but apparently my server chokes on larger images.

Or if you have suggestions on increasing performance, I’m all ears.

BTW, I like the way you broke up the increasingly long settings page with version 2. One suggestion: the settings sub nav ( cloud, basic, advanced, conversion) might make more intuitive sense if it appeared below the “Plugin status” box, closer to the section that it affects.

Thanks again for the useful plugin!

Update: I don’t think it’s the size of the PNG that is necessarily the problem. It could maybe be how “optimizable” the image is. The images that cause the problems have large flat color areas.

    An example:

I think you’re on the right track. Size tends to be a major factor, but it isn’t the ONLY factor, there is definitely some sort of complexity factor in there that can affect the optimization time. Generally, anything over 500kb is going to take a while, but anything in the 1-2MB range is definitely going to be problematic. I’ve puzzled over a way to fix that problem in the past, and I’ve also had requests for a max size setting, and for some reason I just never thought to connect the two issues.

So, that said, I’m going to stick this as a feature request for a max PNG size, and let folks post their +1 on this thread.

In 2 years of development, no one has ever reported an issue with JPGs, but if anyone has actually experienced issues with very large JPGs timing out, feel free to comment about that also.

And regarding the ‘sub nav’, I’ll have to give that some thought. It does tend to confuse things a little bit that the nav is up top, then there’s this (potentially) huge status section in the middle, and sometimes you don’t even see the settings that are underneath without scrolling depending on your screen size.

What if the Plugin Status was ‘expandable’? That way it is still near the top, but not taking up so much space unless you actually need to check it.

I agree that minimizing the plugin status box when things are OK is a good idea. I made a mockup that moves the sub navigation down closer to the settings pane and minimizes the status box, too.

That looks pretty good. I’ll see if I can work that in on one of the next few bugfix releases.
