• Hi,

Late last year I had a problem with media gallery Insrting Images into posts. I came to look for a solution but no one seemed to have any and the topic someone posted had since been closed so Its not just my WordPress that suffers the problem.

The host of mine tried a few tests but found no problem from there, they came to the conclusion its a WordPress fault. TThe media works on two other sites.

This year my Kynismar site suffered the same fate, Images won’t upload from the media gallery so for that site I decided that the only way to get Images into posts was via the address from the host.

The error on my Rovers site:

brothercadfaelrose.jpg An error occurred in the upload. Please try again later.

Now my Blackburn Rovers has also suffered the same fate, media not putting Images into posts.

    Thanks!

@samuel Wood; is the default error message for an undefined upload error.

    Yes, thats true.

As you know Samuel we have three sizes, I am presuming we can change the default size after install?

My Images are usually 480x 300, never ever a zip unless its a theme through dashboard, then we can only upload a zip. 9/10 I use FTP filezilla.

We can happily be posting with Images then suddenly it will not upload…end of. I have no idea when my trouble first began, first of my sites to have this trouble was my dog site, her site was running very well from 2008 till till 2011. Nothing changed, I had always used plugin of one sort, and only one, alaways used the same us.mungus visitor map. What was the new version for the year 2011 because thats when it broke my Install.

I know of one person who has gone back to 3.5.2 to get themselves out of version troubles.
I’m sorry but if a brand new site fails after just a month then something is seriously wrong with the software.

Right summing up; I will upload some images to the gallery first before I create a post.

I am asking my host to Install a new install manually to see if its the auto Installer.

Its going to take some hours for my host as he is a different time zone, please try to leave this open till at least the end of today.

    From some tests by host

Unfortunately this error does not seem to be related to server. I have tested this by checking different settings on server. Logs are not showing any errors. Following are the tests that I performed.

    1. Checked php as well Apache error logs, but there are no errors.
    2. Tried setting the memory limit for all the folders and subfolders as sometimes setting the memory limit in “public_html” will not affect the sub-folders.
    3. Verified the permissions and ownership for uploads directory and its fine.
    4. Tried the fix as mentioned at https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/unable-to-insert-images-in-wp-version-35 by “JoseVega” (Adding define(‘CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS’, false ); in wp-config.php file just before require_once(ABSPATH . ‘wp-settings.php’); ). This is not working in our case.
    5. Tried disabling the suhosin module on server because normally this module limit the script activities.

I have researched about this error and could see that this is a common error in wordpress 3.5.x versions. Did she upgrade wordpress recently?

While going through similar issues, I can see that there is not a particular fix for this error. Some are able to fix the error by switching to default theme, some by disabling plugins and some others by reinstalling wordpress.

By the way; these people did not get told off for ‘having the same problem ill after it was resolved.

    https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/unable-to-insert-images-in-wp-version-35

To you its a symptom, to us its a problem.

Thanks for your time. And I do respect anyone who tries to help.

@julienne ofcourse its a problem and we’re here to help.

when a moderator mentions to a member that it’s forum policy to create new topics for new issues/incidents, then the member is not being told off, just told to conform to forum policy.

    Lets agree to disagree.

    Back to the problem:
Did you mention that sometimes uploading works and sometimes it doesnt and then it works again? On the same install without any updates?

If that is the case, have you been able to upload and insert images since you created this topic?

Have you activated wp_debug in wp_config and checked the logging?

(if you do this on a live site: please restrict access to your site to only your ip-address with .htaccess)

    (@julienne)

@purab; Did you checked the uploads folder permission on server. Set the uploads permission and that will fix your issue.

lol do you think my host has’nt tried things like that?

    <img class=”alignright size-full wp-image-####” alt=”Insert Alternative Text” src=”https://YourWebsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/ImageName.jpg&#8221; width=”###” height=”###”/>

That IS the code when its working.

This used to be the code in 2008 when the dog site was installed

    <p align=”center”><img border=”2″ width=”500″ src=”https://www.jungaling.com/bichimgs/cashorse.jpg&#8221; alt=”My Whiteghost and his trick” height=”295″ /></p>

If we make a post, then try to add an Image by clicking media, not ‘add media’ to take the image from the gallery then we get a message ‘do we want to leave the page’.

I think its far easier to upload and grab the address for myself. But I will wait to hear from the host on a manual Install and see if its the auto Installer.

I can also try different browsers on the two sites that don’t work.

If that what we next try fails then I need to rethink what software I want my sites on because it will be a fault within WordPress versions. Its where most seem to have the media problem.

It may be I will have to wait some time once the new Install goes in, months possibly.

    @julienne

If we make a post, then try to add an Image by clicking media, not ‘add media’ to take the image from the gallery then we get a message ‘do we want to leave the page’.

The advice robin W was giving you is: have you tried to login to your site. Then from your dashboard go to media > add new and upload an image.

Then after you have uploaded the image (if it works), create a new post. Click add media, look for the uploaded image and insert it.

We’re trying to find out if uploading problems just occur when you upload from within a post. Or if it also happens if you upload from the media menu.

    @julienne

    @purab asked you;

Did you checked the uploads folder permission on server. Set the uploads permission and that will fix your issue.

    You answered:

lol do you think my host has’nt tried things like that?

We don’t know what your host has or has not checked. Laughing at a member for trying to suggest a possible solution is very impolite and will prevent others from suggesting a solution.

As far as I’m concerned there are no stupid questions, and there are no stupid answers.

If this is frustrating to you feel free to contract a local WordPress developer who I’m sure will be happy to provide paid support (with access to your website)

If you decide to activate wp_debug, I’d be very interested in the log created while the upload error occurs.

    Thread Starter julienne

    (@julienne)

Mike, the logs have already been looked at, there are no errors. They did certain tests and nothing came up.

    1. Checked php as well Apache error logs, but there are no errors.
    2. Tried setting the memory limit for all the folders and subfolders as sometimes setting the memory limit in “public_html” will not affect the sub-folders.

    5. Tried disabling the suhosin module on server because normally this module limit the script activities.

An error occurred in the upload. Please try again later.

    Back to the problem:
Did you mention that sometimes uploading works and sometimes it doesnt and then it works again? On the same install without any updates?

If that is the case, have you been able to upload and insert images since you created this topic?

Once the WordPress breaks it does’nt mend. Each time I make a post I try the media just in case it works again but it does’nt. This from minutes ago.

An error occurred in the upload. Please try again later.

It was a test so is now deleted.

Anyway thanks to everyone, I do get frustrated especially when the problem never gets solved even with new Installs. Media works for so long then its broken, never to return.

I still have to try a new Install when the host replies to my message at his site.

I still have to try different browsers.

I don’t want to run WordPress bare boned for long, but it will get 6 months or till it breaks down..

Ok, just to confirm that you activated wp_debug in wp-config.php and that when you got that media error there was no logging for that error.

I would expect to have at least something logged. I’ve never had a clean/empty log while running wp_debug. If you really do have clean logs then it would be wise to have the host raise the error logging level.

Don’t just try other browsers, try a completely different computer, that has never accessed your site. (Thats probably not it, since the error seems to be server side, but just to eliminate)

    Thread Starter julienne

    (@julienne)

They looked at everything, nothing came up.

    I don’t have another computer.

So is this it, another unresolved?

There *has to be a reason why the software breaks down. It just might be WordPress at fault but no one will admit it. Other people have this problem as well..no its down to the coders to get it right with new versions.

Each new version brings a new problem for someone.

Still no solution after five years.

I will continue for now to upload my own images by url which I know at least is successful.

Waitng for host to agree a manual Install which I will agree a fee for the work.

Try Chrome and Internet Explorer. If there are any success’ on the three sites for the media I will return to let people know.

I can’t be fairer than that Mike.
    Thanks for your Imput.
    J

    @julienne

Its unfortunate that you insist blaming WordPress.
If it is a WordPress bug than we’ll fix it. But first through carefull analysis we have to locate the error.

Blaming WordPress requires proof. Saying they checked everything just isnt proof.
A system administrator knows that if you checked everything and there is still an error, you didn’t check everything.

If the logs are clean then you raise the logging level.

Tiust me, if we can prove it is WordPress nobody will have a problem admitting it.
Thats why we have bugfixes and buglists

You mention there are more people with this problem. With 18% of all websites running WordPress ofcourse there will be problems. But as I mentioned up till now everytime I encountered this issue there was a different cause. (Read posts above for at least 4 causes)

Anyway there is more you can do as I mentioned before:

Activate wp_debug try to upload an image and send us a link to the log file.
Install new clean WordPress install in a sub directory (ten minutes work, tops) and check if problem occurs.

If a clean install works, then trust me, it’s not a WordPress error. If a clean install also does not work then it might be an incompability with your hosting company servers or settings.

I’m dying to find out what is the cause.

So is this it, another unresolved?

It will be as you seem to be more intent on attacking people on here who give their time for free, than giving us the symptoms – YES Symptoms, that how a doctor works out what’s wrong with a patient, along with carrying out some tests, just as doctors run tests to find out what is wrong – sorry but it does involve you doing some work rather than attacking us –

That is how you get from a problem to a diagnosis, then to a fix, by looking at symptoms carrying out tests, and looking at details not generalisations.

WordPress is developed for free, costs you nothing to have, and is supported for free by a community of volunteers – I come onto the forum and help where I can to give something back to the community, so that I don’t just take. I do not expect abuse from people who seem to think they have a right to support and then attack those trying to help them.

There are over 80 million wordpress websites. If there was “something is seriously wrong with the software” there would be more than a few people with this issue.

As others have said, you keep saying this is a wordpress issue. Your website consists of :
Lots of complex server stuff, inc. hardware, software, and operating systems
Network – yes lost of network bits
You PC – ever thought that maybe it is a problem with your end that is causing it? You have multiple sites, there are millions of websites, but just your PC.
Wordpress core software – the stuff that runs wordpress
Wordpress themes – the stuff that is individual to a set of sites
Wordpress Plugins – stuff that adds functionality
MySQL database – the stuff that holds your data
    Your directories, structure and permissions

Yet you insist that it is wordpress core that is the issue.

You state that other people have fixed this by changing themes and by removing plugins – so for these people it is not wordpress, but these add ons – yet you insist that it is wordpress.

Ok tirade over, and I feel better for that

Can you please carry out the tests you have been asked to do.

    1. Firstly try adding a file just using dashboard>add media and then create a post and add the media from the media library. Does it produce the same result?
This is to let us know if the issue is wider than just one within a post

    2. Can you tell us what the permission on your upload folder are?
This is to confirm that these are at a level that would not prevent upload
    3. Have you tried a new install of wordpress, in a subfolder on the same host? Just the basic install, no plugins, no theme apart from the default WordPress theme.
This will tell us if maybe your theme or plugins have an issue, or possible corruption of wordpress files. the answer to this will determine which of several routes to take next.

    4. Did she upgrade wordpress recently? when did you upgrade from 3.5.x to 3.6 or has this site always run on 3.6?
this may help us to determine if an upgrade corruption is the issue
    5. Have you activated wp_debug, as people on here would be very interested in the log created while the upload error occurs
Again this will help us diagnose possible areas
    6. Try Chrome and Internet Explorer
This will help to se if this is browser related.

Until you help us, and start to accept that ALL the people above want to resolve and stop attacking us and the software, we will get no further forward.

    Thread Starter julienne

    (@julienne)

    I am not attacking anyone,

Maybe one day there will be a solution for all.

    Thankyou, again many thanks..many thanks.

So you’re not prepared to do any diagnostic tests then?

    Thread Starter julienne

    (@julienne)

I decided to upload by url robin, thanks to everyone for their help.

Its been a right ball ache due to the media not working, far easier to login to my host and grab the url.

I hope one day someone will create a version where everything works as it supposed to.

By the way; Internet Explorer was no different, the media wouldn’t work in there either.

    Have a great day all.
