Media File Manger, RIP

I recently received a message from WordFence that the plugin called Media File Manager had been removed from the WP plugin repository. No reason was given.

I’ve been using this plugin quite happily for some time now but on this information I think I will have to look for an alternative as someone somewhere seems to have decided that it is no longer fit for purpose. I’m using version 1.4.2 under WP 4.9.8 and (so far) it has not given me any obvious trouble.

I’m hoping the plugin won’t actually kill my site any time soon, but can anyone –

(a) suggest an alternative (free) file manager? All I really need is to be able to create and manage my own folders within the Library – absolutley nothing fancy required. I’m thinking of WP File Manager. Can this be recommended?
and
(b) give me any explanation as to why this plugin has been pulled?
