    Hi there,
I’m out of tricks with a problem I’m having with a client’s site. When adding a new post or page, the Add Media button brings up the media overlay, uploading or chosing an image from the library work fine, changes to the caption etc. work fine – only nothing happens to the post/page when hitting that “insert into post” button. When clicking that button I get back to the post page, but I still have a blank textfield, no image.

I also cannot insert new images in old posts, so it does not seem to be limited to post-new.php. And in the list view of the media library I can attach an image to a new post, but that doesn’t make this image appear in the post. I don’t know if that did happen before, though.

That’s consistent behaviour across different computers, browsers (Firefox 35.0.1 and Chrome v40), with plugins enabled or disabled, with the customized theme the client’s using and a vanilla Twenty Fifteen theme. I’ve tried several tricks people have posted for similar problems with past versions of WP, but nothing helped.
To be sure, that problem already existed with WP4.1, I did the update to 4.1.1 today in hope that would help. It didn’t.
I also did update the complete filelist (except wp-config) of the site by ftp in case there was something missing somewhere. No change.

I’m self taught on WP and anything but a coder, but it seems to me as if there’s a function call missing when clicking that button. The weird thing is that anything else on the site seems to work just fine. Oh, wait: for some reason Jetpack can’t connect to WP.com, there’s a 403 error; I guess I’ll have to sort that out with my hosting company, I don’t think both issues are related. But that’s all.

Is anyone else experiencing anything similar that is apparently _not_ related to a plugin or a theme? I’m really at a loss for more ideas here. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi again,
since no one seems to be able to make any contribution to my problem without at least some further information of what is actually happening, with the help of a friend I dug a little deeper.
I tried the error console in Firefox but there are just a couple of warnings, apparently unrelated to the problem at hand.

Much more interesting was the network analysis, which revealed that when clicking that “insert into post” button, admin-ajax.php gets a redirect (302) to the root of the site (/) instead of inserting the [caption…] snippet into the post (I would post a screenshot of it here, but that does not seem to be possible).

Without an error message we couldn’t determine what the cause of this was, but maybe with this information someone can give me a hint where to look further.

BTW, there’s nothing in the site’s error logs either, it’s not just the Firefox console.

Ok, although no one seems to be interested in this topic, I’ll document the “solution” I’ve found, and if only for myself.
In a seemingly unrelated matter, the hosting provider had disabled access to xmlrpc.php for “security reasons”. I had petitioned him to make it accessible again to be able to use Jetpack and a couple of other features that rely on this file (and plugins like “Rename XMLRPC.PHP” or hacking the .htaccess file hadn’t worked).
After some back and forth I finally got them to make it accessible on the promise to shut off pingback functionality for the site in question (which apparently can be misused for DDOS attacks). Once that was done – voilà: adding media to posts did work again (as well as Jetpack etc.).
Funny how things sometimes work out.

I too am having problems updating an old post with new photo’s and I can’t seem to find anyone that’s able to help me with it.

    Hi indulgencesalon,

have you read my whole description above and how I solved my problem? There might be a hint in there that could help you, too. To check that try to access

    https://www.put-your-domain-name.here/xmlrpc.php

If you get an error you might have the same problem as I. You’ll most likely have to take that to your hosting provider.

Other than that: you’d have to be a little more specific about your problem and what you tried to solve it for people to be able to help you. For starters: try changing images on other computers/browsers/operating systems if you can or at least start your browser without any active addons. You might have some addon in your standard browser that’s causing a problem (eg NoScript). Then make sure you don’t have any pending updates of WordPress or your plugins. Then, switch to a standard WP theme (like Twenty fifteen) and try changing images. If it works, there’s a problem with your theme.

If it still doesn’t work, switch off _all_ of your plugins and try again. If it works, switch on one plugin at a time and try again as long as it works. This way you’ll find out which plugin is causing the problem. If it still doesn’t work you’re in about the same position I was in when I first opened this thread.

If your problem is not also caused by an inaccessible xmlrpc file (see above), you might end up having to add/change images in posts by hand (uploading the image file and manually putting in a
    <img src="put-link-to-your-image-here" />
tag into your posts in the text view where you want the image to appear). That is a tedious process, but it will most likely work, if you can update the text content of your posts. You will need to know a little HTML, though. Good luck!

    Hi,
I’ve the same problem with WordPress 4.1.1.
I created an article, when I press “ADD MEDIA” button, nothing appears.
I also tried to write tags on “add tags” field, and press “ADD TAGS”. Nothing happened.
I tried both with Firefox 36.0.1 and with Internet Explorer 11 (11.0.17), same behaviour.
I got “XML-RPC server accepts POST requests only.” when I open https://www.put-your-domain-name.here/xmlrpc.php

Notice I can add media from Media menu on left side bar of dashboard, but than I can’t add them on articles.

    Regards,
    vfvalent

PS: I use NGINX as web server.

I am also unable to load media files subsequent to upgrading to WordPress 4.1.1. “file.png” has failed to upload due to an error
Unable to create directory wp-content/uploads. Is its parent directory writable by the server?” — yes, it is 775.

    I also get the message “XML-RPC server accepts POST requests only.” when I open https://www.put-your-domain-name.here/xmlrpc.php&#8221;

I can not add media from the left side menu. I can only add media via FTP, and then have no access to the media library.

I would also note that I was able to load media prior to upgrading to 4.1, and that I was NOT able to automatically upgrade to 4.1 — I had to FTP the zip file and upgrade manually.

My ISP claims that this is NOT their doing.

I have the same problem with a plain vanilla version of WordPress 4.1 (with no plugins installed) that I loaded on our server.

    Next steps?

I am also having problems uploading documents with wordpress 4.2.2
Pictures seem to upload ok. pdf and word documents only appears as names. pressing them in view mode only asks you where you want to save them. nothing seems to let you see what is in the document even though library shows that the document is about the right size.

ive suddenly started having this problem in the last week. the media button is there, i can upload files into the media library but when i choose one to go in to a post, the screen just goes back to my post. nothing is added, no indication given as to me even trying to add an image

    tried a new theme
    tried disabling all plugins
    tried a new post
tried old post that already has images in it
    tried using previously uploaded images
    all failed

i also checked that xlmrpc thing and got told “post’ only

Using 4.2.2. here – I’m also having this issue with PDFs. I can upload them into the media library but when I try to access their URLs – both from my end in the Dashboard and from the user’s end on the site – I get an internal server error.

My initial digging into this issue led me to a thread that called it a PhP issue, and that I had to upgrade to PhP 5.5. I’m hosted by FatCow which only lets me upgrade to 5.3, but after I did so with FatCow I’m still having problems. I’ve tried uploading the PDFs through an FTP client and the problem remains.

Oh – and I should also add that this ONLY applies to PDFs that I’ve recently tried to upload. Everything from before about a month ago loads just fine.

    Any insight – anyone?
