Media Library / Image Corruption

Hi Guys,

Earlier this week I was dealing with an issue I had never seen before involving the media library. It caused all images to disappear from the front end of our site.

Another colleague and I spent approx 4h troubleshooting the issue to no avail. Off the top of my head, this is what I can remember we tried: Checked images exist in file manager (cPanel), checked file permissions (755 for folders and 644 for files), disabled all plugins, removed theme / used default theme, no changes in server or migration of the website (same server for 5+ years) and all (350+) websites on same server worked fine, and eventually deleted all media and re-uploaded. Along with a few minor tweaks and after a lot of head-scratching, we decided we had to result to a full site backup which luckily worked, but lost of a few days worth of changes on the site.

I was wondering if anyone had encountered this issue before, or if you can suggest a reason you think the images may have ‘disappeared’ so we can prevent / fix quickly in the future.
