Very minor issue but something I’ve always noticed and just now taking the time to post… whenever you export and then import to another site (multisite) the Attachment Display Settings –> Link To setting is never carried over. I usually have it set to “none” on the site I export from and it always stays at the default of “Media File” after I import.

Thanks for noticing this and reporting it. Yes, it’s true that the three Attachment Display Settings are not preserved in the export/import process.

These three settings are WordPress settings, not MLA settings. WordPress doesn’t provide any user interface for setting them so I added it to MLA as a convenience. The current export/import code only works with MLA settings, so these are not included.

My recent testing reveals that WordPress has changed the way these settings are used in the upcoming version 4.4 release. It is not clear to me when, if at all, the settings will be used in the new version. The new code seems to rely on a browser cookie to record separate settings for each user, and I could not find a way to have the “site wide default” settings reflected in the Media Manager Modal (popup) Window.

I will add this to my enhancement list, but you may find it doesn’t matter much going forward.

I have released MLA version 2.20, which includes support for exporting/importing the three Attachment Display Settings.

I am marking this topic resolved, but please update it if you have any problems with the new version. Thanks for inspiring this MLA enhancement.

As I expected, WordPress 4.4 changed the way the Attachment Display Settings are handled. I have added a more flexible approach to MLA in response to this recent topic:

Choosing Default Size For Attachment Display Settings No Longer Works

I have uploaded a new Development Version dated 20160114 that contains the new feature. To get the Development Version, follow the instructions in this earlier topic:

Shortcode not working in (special) widget

It would be great if you can install the Development Version and let me know if it works for you. Of course, if any other problems emerge I want to know about them as well.

I updated it and I believe the default setting is working and working they way I hoped it would. I wanted only images to have a default link to of none and all others to keep the default behavior. At one point inserting links to files (e.g. PDFs) kept getting inserted with just the media title and no link (and choosing to link it manually would work but would not survive a page refresh). Not sure if that was MLA overriding it or not.

Thanks for taking the time to try the Development Version and for your update. You will be interested in this related topic and the various Trac tickets I link to from my most recent post there:

This is more complex than I first thought.

I just checked the latest MLA Development Version on a new site with all default values and discovered a side-effect of the recent WordPress changes. The way they set the “Link to” option has changes and is confusing MLA.

If you go to the Settings/Media Library Assistant General tab and scroll down to the “Attachment Display Settings” section you may see “Link to: none”. You can try changing that to “- Media Manager Default -“. I haven’t looked at all the details of the new “none for images, file for other MIME types” logic WordPress has apparently added.
