• Is this because Media Library doesn’t know about files unless uploaded via itself?

Should I re-upload the images using Media Library, and if so, will I run into problems? Duplicates?

    Thank you!

  • I’ve just noticed this too. I wanted to use a banner image for my theme that I was using in another WP install on the same host, so I just copied the image file from one directory to another. No answer for you I’m afraid but I’m in a similar position, asking the same questions.

I bet you had the same “uh-oh” feeling when you realized the implications…

For me, I accidentally deleted my uploads folder, then re-populated it manually. Short time later went into media library to do something and noticed, not the 10 images I just uploaded, but 3 broken picture icon.

I got this queasy feeling then vaguely remembered something like, Media library doesn’t “know” about images unless they are uploaded via the Media Library tools…

That’s right, you need to use the upload function of the media library. The reason is that WordPress creates a database entry for each image (title, etc…) but also creates different sizes of the image (all of these stored in the upload folder).

I guessed it must be something like that. I had a browse of the tables out of curiosity but couldn’t find any references.

The immediate problem for me now (and the OP I suspect) is how to tidy things up. I now probably have a few images in my uploads folder that are not recognised by WP – as it doesn’t actually know they’re there. They’re just taking up space.

yeah, that’s about right. Since I accidentally deleted the uploads folder, there is not much TO tidy up. ??

However, now that I am having this learning experience, I want to re-set things up the right way.

Unless I hear different, I am going to re-upload the images (Which I uploaded via FTP) using the media library tool. Be interesting to see whether I end up with dupes or not..I suspect that I won’t, but if I do, the new question will be which dupe is deletable, or will I have to re-do things all over again; meaning, re-link.

I’m doing this in the editor in code, so..as long as the path is correct, I’d think I’d be ok..
