media library trouble

When I upload images to the media library on a site I’m helping my husband build, they don’t show up — not in the media library thumbnails, not on the page, nowhere.

We’re using theme twenty-thirteen, but I had the same problem when I tried it on twenty-eleven, too. It’s happening on both Chrome and Safari, on different computers, and with images I’ve even got displayed on a different WP site. I tried updating Version 3.8 to no avail.

Has anyone else had trouble getting their images to appear in the library? Any suggestions?
