    Hey everybody,

I am going to put my investigation of this issue here as I track through it. Some background on myself: I run 12 different WordPress installs personally and support thousands of customers using WordPress.

On all of my WP installs except 1, everything is working perfectly. However, on 1 install, I can’t access my Media Library when clicking on “Dashboard” > “Media”. The page itself loads but the uploads in my media library do not load – rather the spinning wheel just spins forever.

    Steps I have taken already:
    – I have de-activated all plugins and reverted to the twenty fourteen theme
    – I checked the server to make sure there is enough RAM, Hardrive space, and other resources.
    – I checked permissions in apache and all are set to be owned by apache
    – I restarted Apache
    – I restarted the entire server

The only thing that has brought back my Media Library has been downgrading to WordPress 3.9.2 by downloading it from here:
    https://www.ads-software.com/download/release-archive/

When I downgrade and reload WordPress, I get a “Your Database needs to be upgraded” message. Once I do the “upgrade” (this is v 3.9.2), my Media Library loads perfectly.

When I move back to 4.0 (have tried using both the automatic updater and SFTP to update to 4.0 multiple times each), I don’t get the upgrade message and my media library does not load.

I have WP_DEBUG mode on and no errors are showing. There are no javascript errors showing in the console on Google Chrome either.

I will post any follow up information about how to fix this here when I find it.

  • I am having the same thing. I’ve tried IE, Chrome, and FF.

Same thing to me. I also reinstalled manually the 4.0. Same result, permalinks just don’t connect.

Here is what they (support personnel) are asking for:

    1. Does it still happen with all plugins disabled and a default theme
(Twenty Fourteen or Twenty Thirteen) activated?
    2. Are there any
    [https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Using_Your_Browser_to_Diagnose_JavaScript_Errors
    JavaScript errors] in your browser?

In this case it was this plugin for me. Disabling it fixed the issue.

For anyone who is having the same issue, can you please test if it works for you in “List” mode but not in “Grid” mode?

For me I just realized if I select “List” mode it does work (The icons at the top left of the display area)

@ccwtech Glad you found the issue in your case!

This thread is actually intended for people who have already tried disabling all plugins and have reverted to the Twenty Fourteen theme to rule out plugins or theme issues.

Ok, that wasn’t clear in your topic name.

This may be of interest to you.

Sorry about that! I should have been more clear. Thanks for the link. Still digging through this to find a solution.

This issue is now a confirmed bug in 4.0:

Please note: This is only relevant if you have all plugins disabled and the twentyfourteen theme active. If you are using custom plugins or themes, it is still likely to be a problem caused by a plugin or theme. Make sure to test that out by disabling all plugins and using the default twentyfourteen theme first.

I too am having this issue with one of my WordPress installs. Deactivating plugins didn’t help me. I was able to get the media to show in list view, but cannot get it to show when attempting to set a featured image on a post, as there is no option there for list view.

I got my issue resolved. I had a security setting in my .htaccess file wasn’t allowing access to /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php. I removed that line and presto! It worked.

    Hi

Did anyone solve this? (other than thinsafetypin) I have this issue. In addition my images do not show in list format. Oddly I can upload images and I can see them perfectly.

    Thanks

I fixed this by having WordPress reinstall itself. For me, it appeared that some virus was putting nonsense into the AJAX HTTP responses.

    To have WordPress reinstall itself:

    1. Go to Dashboard > Updates.
    2. Click “Re-install Now”.

This is a reply to LakeHMM.

I did exactly as you suggested — Re-Installed WordPress 4.1.1 and suddenly everything worked. This is interesting because when 4.1.1 was automatically updated by WordPress (I don’t believe I imagined this), my images stopped working and my Jetpack stopped working also and would not re-load and gave me an error message re:code which I couldn’t decipher…and…there were quite a few “ands” the next thing I know Google tells me my site was hacked. I contact Bluehost, they run a check and sure enough — it is hacked. They clean it up with Site Doctor and tell me that they believe WordPress plugins are responsible for the infection.

It’s all pretty interesting but now everything works again after a week of being either offline or running at half-mast.

Just had this exact same issue, re-installing 4.1.1 fixed this for me. So glad i found this, Thanks everyone
