Media Meta Data

When uploading images, where does the media library get the information it uses to fill in the description? I assume there is meta data in the .jpg file that the library is pulling from.

Where can I learn more so that, for example, I can specify the data while working in Photoshop, and have the media library pick it up upon uploading?
