• Hi there,
I’m running a recipe blog and moved all my images to a subdomain (media.myrecipeblog.com) a few years ago before installing Yoast SEO.

I noticed that images have never shown up in Google’s rich snippets for my recipes. When I use Google’s Structured Data Testing Tool, it does get an image submitted by Yoast, but when I click on the preview, it shows a placeholder and not my image.

I then realized that my entire media subdomain and the images on it are not indexed by Google. I have never submitted it and it doesn’t show up in Yoast’s sitemaps either. I just always thought it would automatically index my images if they showed up in the source of my main blog.

Have I made a mistake by moving my images to a subdomain and would it be better to move them back to myrecipeblog.com/media for example? Or should I manually submit my domain to Google so that it will index my images? What’s the best way to go about this?

  • Hi @joff19 ,

You mentioned that your images are not showing in your sitemap. Some themes or pagebuilder modules may not show the images on the sitemap. You may need to add them via a filter: wpseo_sitemap_urlimages. This filter will then register images to appear on the sitemap.
If you are not sure how to use the filter you may wish to speak with your theme or plugin developer. You may also need to hire a Yoast Partner.

Regarding your concern about the images being placed on a subdomain or on a subfolder, unfortunately, we are unable to provide any recommendation. Giving?SEO advice, in most cases, requires a deep analysis of your site to provide accurate advice for your specific setup, even for what may seem to be a simple question.

At Yoast, we want to help people improve their site and to make SEO attainable for everyone. So we offer?Yoast Academy?courses on all aspects of SEO, several great plugins, and a?comprehensive SEO blog.?

We understand that not everyone has the interest or time to learn SEO.?Our main advice at this point?would be to check for a local SEO company and see if they can help out. If you are using a web development agency, you could ask them, as most agencies have at least a basic understanding of SEO as well – the good ones do.

    Hi jerparx,

thanks for your reply and the advice.

I am using a TwentySixteen child theme which I have created myself. Most of my images are inserted in into posts through the standard editor from the uploaded media. I am using SiteOrigin for my frontpage, but not for my individual posts (which I am referencing here in this thread).

I just wanted to make sure that having a subdomain for my media is not somehow interfering with Yoast adding my images to the sitemap or with them getting indexed by Google automatically.

If you have moved all of your images into a subdomain or even when using a CDN service like Cloudflare, you’ll need to use the wpseo_sitemap_urlimages for Yoast SEO plugin to make sure that Yoast SEO uses the correct image path in the schema markup and as well as in the XML sitemap. You can find more information about this here. https://yoast.com/help/images-in-the-xml-sitemap/#image-filter2
