Member/directory plugin rec

Apologies if this has been answered ad infinitum, I did do some brief searching here and a day of Googling, I feel none the wiser as a result. In fact, I am probably more confused.

I need a plugin to handle a fairly simple member site, most plugins seem ridiculously overblown for what this client needs. They handle subs offline so I don’t need paypal/stripe etc. integration.

The main requirements are to have a self service signup/account maintenance model. Its around 600-700 members and a small board that manage the site, they don’t want to manually maintain much beyond approving new members. From that point each member should be able to edit all their data; customizable fields for the members are a requirement too.

The final requirement that’s tripping me up is the client wants some of the data users enter, to be searchable in a secured member side directory. E.g find all users in region X, or find all users who state they have expertise in Y.

Any insight appreciated, I feel like I’m looking in the proverbial haystack right now.
