There are some earlier discussions on this but they do not answer my question.
I recently turned on the “Anyone can Register” setting to see what it produced because I did not know that “register” means. I soon received about ten persons who “registered,” receiving emails with person’s names and emails. They all strangely came from “gmail.com” addresses. I then discovered that I had given these ten persons “author” roles by setting the “New User Default role” to that function not realizing that this setting related to the “Anyone can Register.” And one of the newly “registered” persons had made several posts in a foreign language. Of course I have removed those.
I have of course shut the “Anyone Can Register” off because now I have started to understand what I’ve done. I suggest that “New User Default Role” and “Anyone Can Register” be somehow better explained. It is not obvious to a new person using WordPress to design a web site that these two settings are extremely connected. I thought it meant that when I add a new user myself, that I could enter their role. I guess I need to by several more WordPress books; mine failed me on this.
But my main question is nowhere on my web site is there a form for such “register” emails to be sent, so what mechanism have people used to send these emails to me? I have two “Contact Form 7” variations on the site, one a “Join [my organization]” and another general “Contact us.” Having tested them extensively, one can tell when each is used, due to either the design and content of the “subject” field or the specific sentences that the contactform 7 places into them indicating precisely the name of the contact form I created.
So how are visitors sending me emails and what do they think they are doing by “registering?” I do not have a blog on the site, just a “comment” section. Is this spam of some sort? That they are all from “gmail” accounts must give some hint to the answer?
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

When someone registers WordPress sends you an email to the address you entered on that same general settings page.

    But how do they register?

Once anyone can register is checked when you go to sign in the registration option is there. You can post a link on your site with a register button, if you want to send them to

Do you mean that if anyone goes to my web site and I have it set so anyone can register, that anyone can create an account (register)at the user level I have set?

its ok to allow anyone to register but you allso need to set the role for a new registernt. are they pauwns kings or queens you can find the settings to define new user roles in general, reading ,wrighting or discussions under settings on the dash just check which one you want you can also activate a plugin called edit user roles it lets you choose the the funtion that a new users are allowed to have very simple check box format.

Yes. When they sign in they get a screen that matches their role. They do not see the admin screen you see unless you gave them that capability.

OK, so the dashboard they see and use matches their function.

Thanks to everyone, particularly kmessinger. I’m new and need to do a lot more climbing up the learning curve. Hope this review helps others.

    best regards/frank
