I am new to WordPress and am learning a lot through this forum. However, I have a couple of questions and I can’t find the answers. I’m hoping you can help. My blog is foodie-for-thought.com
My first question is there a way to put a subscriber button in the main menu instead of in the footer. Kind of like the contact button.
Second, I like the drop-down menu, but just want another option also. I would like to be able to click on recipes and it would go to a page with all the subcategories (Breakfast, poultry, etc) From there you could click on a subcategory, like breakfast, and it would take you to a page showing all the breakfast recipes. Is this possible?
Thanks so much.

Sure – you can add a link to a separate subuscription page to a custom menu.
To create the signup page:
Since you’re using the Jetpack subscription system, you’d first create a page and add the subscription shortcode to it:
[jetpack_subscription_form]
You can add attributes to the shortcode to customize it if you like — here’s a guide:
https://jetpack.com/support/subscriptions/#shortcodeAfter publishing the page, add it to your custom menu.
Let me know how it goes.

If your main categories won’t change often, then could create a page and manually list your categories, linking each to its corresponding category archive page.
For example, create a page and list:
Breakfast
Poultry
Desserts
etc. You’d link each word to its automatically-generated category archive, like:
https://foodie-for-thought.com/category/recipes/breakfasts/
etc.
Kathryn,
The menu subscribe button works great! Thanks so much. Now, if I delete the subscribe widget in the footer, do I still have my subscribers who used that button?Kathryn,
I was able to create a page with all the subcategories linked to the category archive and it worked! However, it doesn’t look the way I would like it to. If you click on Breakfasts in the drop-down menu, it goes to a page with each breakfast and a picture. From there, you are able to click on each individual breakfast. I would like the recipe page to look like that. It does work that way, it just doesn’t look like that. It just has the categories listed, and if I add a photo, it puts it underneath. Any way to make it look the same?
Also, I would like only six total posts on my front page (which I have). But, when I go to another recipe page, I’d like to see all the recipes in that category. (Right now I do. But I think when I have more recipes, I will only see six.) Can I change that?Hi @suzzle,

Yes, removing the button won’t have an impact on the number of people who are subscribed to your blog. ??

Getting a list of individual links to display in a grid, in the same way your posts are, would require a fair bit of custom HTML and CSS. The level of customisation needed goes beyond the scope of support that this forum is intended for, however, if you felt comfortable giving it a go then you could borrow from the HTML and CSS the theme uses for its posts.
Another option is for you to browse the plugin repository for grid builder to see if there’s a plugin that will help you to achieve what you’re after:
https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/search.php?type=term&q=page+grid+builder
Also, I would like only six total posts on my front page (which I have). But, when I go to another recipe page, I’d like to see all the recipes in that category. (Right now I do. But I think when I have more recipes, I will only see six.) Can I change that?
The most straightforward way to set different numbers of total posts to display on different pages of your site is with a plugin. Custom Post Limits is an example of one that would work for your needs and you can have a browse about the plugin repository for other options, too.
Hope that helps out!
Siobhan,
I have been trying to figure out how to use page builder to solve my problem with the menu. I am having no luck. In the meantime, SiteGround updated WordPress to 4.6.1, which completely changed the appearance of my blog on a mobile device. Previously it matched the view on the desktop. The desktop version is the same, but the mobile display now shows the entire posts and no feature photos. I restored the SiteGround back-up to 4.6 and that did not help. Siteground said this is beyond the scope of their expertise. I hope you can help me.
Thank you
SaraNever mind Siobhan. I found the there was an option in jetpack for mobile frienUpdraftPlus – Backup/Restoredly device theme and i unchecked it. YAY!
Now, are Page Builder by Site Origin and UpdraftPlus – Backup/Restore good plug-ins to install? I thought maybe I should do my own back apps and I was hoping page builder would help me with my menu issues. But I have not yet figured out how to use it I’ll probably have more questions about that later.
Thanks,
SaraHi Sara,
I’m glad that you were able to restore your site’s mobile appearance! Please double check that you’re running on the latest version of WordPress again. It’s very important to keep up-to-date with the latest version for security.
If an update breaks your site in the future, please post to the general forum here so that we can try to help:
I don’t have experience with either of the plugins you mentioned (Page Builder by Site Origin and UpdraftPlus – Backup/Restore), but it’s a great idea to create back ups of your site. You can also read through the reviews section for each plugin to get a general idea of people’s opinions:
- https://www.ads-software.com/support/plugin/updraftplus/reviews/
For questions how to use each plugin, you can visit the support section on their sites:
If you have more general questions on setting your menu up or customising Dyad then I’ll be happy to help with them, too.
Siobhan,
I haven’t worked on the recipe page for the menu again, but, when I get that chance, you will be hearing from me. In the meantime, I do have other questions.
Someone posted a comment on my most recent post and got an error message? What could cause that and how can I fix it?
My mom posted a comment to test and it says “your comment is awaiting moderation” which is as it should be, I expect. However, she got an email to confirm, and when she did, she got an error message which said “Your subscription could not be activated, it may have expired.” and it said it was the management page for my dad’s email. What’s up with that? He opened an account with www.ads-software.com when I first started with my blog, so he could try to help with problems I might have. (Unfortunately, he knows no more than I do about this.) But, why would an email to my mom’s account lead to one with his email?
Also, at the bottom of each post and and page are buttons to log in and for Entries RSS and Comments RSS. I don’t know what these do, or if I need them or how to get rid of them. Please give me an explanation and some advice. I think they may be causing problems.
When I first started this blog, I thought my main problem would be consistently coming up with new content. What would I do without you?
Thanks,
Your new best friend,
SaraHi Sara,
The issues that you mentioned surrounding comments and subscriptions are not related to the Dyad theme. Could you post your questions to the Jetpack support forum? As the subscriptions are controlled by that plugin, that forum is a better place for you to go for support.
You can also get in touch with the Jetpack team via their contact form. It may be useful for the team to know the email address for both your parents.
Also, at the bottom of each post and and page are buttons to log in and for Entries RSS and Comments RSS. I don’t know what these do, or if I need them or how to get rid of them. Please give me an explanation and some advice. I think they may be causing problems.
The buttons you’re referring to are known as widgets, which is a fancy word given to different types of content that can be added to your site’s footer.
You can find a lengthier explanation here:
https://codex.www.ads-software.com/WordPress_Widgets
The existing widgets in your footer should not be causing problems. They’re quick links for you to get to your site’s login area and for others to reach your blog’s feed.
You can replace or remove them by navigating to Appearance > Widgets in your admin area.
Let me know if that’s clear or if you have any further questions.
