Menu as atom feed

  • Hi all, I have an issue where I have the same template that spans several sites. I use a multi-site network so sharing the same menu across the sites is fairly easy with creative use of existing plugins.

    Where the sticking point occurs is when I need to share that same menu (with revisions in 1 location) with more than 1 install of the same theme on another server entirely.

    We have situations where the same company theme needs to exist on a separate installation of WordPress. After some thought I figured the easiest way to share a specific menu with the other site is to use some sort of simple RSS/Atom feed widget in that area and pull the feed from our main site.

    This would mean I’d be able to configure only a single menu on the “mother” site, and it would trickle down to the satellite sites where it’d be cached by that server. Freeing me from having to update the same menu across several different servers.

    So to the question, does anyone have any good ideas on how I’d get started putting together an Atom feed of specific menus?

  • RSS is usually used for content. Menus are pointers to content. I imagine you could create a RSS feed to share a menu but I wouldn’t know why you’d want to.

    Maybe consider treating the system wide menu sort of like you’d do a Server Side Include where it resides in one location as a HTMLF file and it could be included to the various websites. https://people.goshen.edu/~paulmr/physix/326/ssi.php

    Menu items are actually posts of post type “nav_menu_item”, so even though they are pointers to content, they are also content in themselves to an extent. As posts, it would be feasible to send them out as a feed. There are better ways to get posts though. I suggest the REST API. Menu items are not normally exposed through the API, but I’m confident they could be made to be exposed somehow.

    If the API is too much hassle, a custom request handler could serve the menu items through either admin-ajax.php or admin-post.php. Any of these schemes would also need code on the other end to assemble the received data into a proper menu structure.
