Menu background colour and text link color problems

I’m currently building a site with Elementor (basic) and GeneratePress (basic), but have problems trying to (1) apply a background colour to the main menu, and (2) trying to colour a text link in a text block other than the standard blue.

Would changing to Elementor Pro enable me to do these, or even going to GeneratePress Pro (which I really don’t want to do if at all possible)?

Your comments and advice would be most useful.
