There seems to be a real need for controlling both the visibility of a menu item and its access. This plugin together with a role editor and a member editor – we used Members and User Role Editor – provide that control. Unfortunately, here are themes that do not play ‘nice’ with the plugin. The only code work-around we found was to modify the basic files of WP; we couldn’t do it with a child theme (maybe we aren’t smart enough). However, if we installed a simple theme, set up new roles, associated the roles with user and set up the roles in menu items and then reverted to the main theme, it worked perfectly. What more could we ask for? Nothing I can think of.

Thanks for kind review. You should not have to edit WP core when dealing with the themes that don’t play nice. You can modify those themes/plugins by following my instructions in the FAQ: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/nav-menu-roles/faq/

I really did follow your instructions but I didn’t get it to work. We have a theme called Newspaper from tagDiv which seems to want to take over all formatting. I should add that going into the admin code did work but as you note it is a BAD idea and it was, at the best, onlty an experiment to prove that something was possible. As it is that using an innocuous theme allows for the setup and reverting to the Newspaper theme for production is satisfactory. It works.
Thanks again for a fine plugin; it should be part of the WP code.

Alternatively, I was reminded today that I created this small plugin:

You can enable it when you need to set the NMR settings but some other theme/plugin is conflicting. It raises the priority on NMR’s filter to such a high level that it should always take precedence. Then disable it when you are done modifying and NMR will keep running in the background.
