• I am having a strange issue, when I go to update navigation labels in my custom menus it will not save the name. It wont even pull in the name of the page it generates a random number as the navigation label each time I try to save. I have tried deactiviting plugins and updating everything and I cant seem to resolve the issue. Can anyone point me in the right direction as far as where to fix this? I can send screen shots ect if necessary.

  • Do you have a lot of menu items?

    Hi,

I also have the same problem with few menu items – using Swedish WordPress-version 4.4.2 med tema Storefront 1.6.1 och Wocommerce 2.5.2, Jetpack 3.9.1.

In the middle of my work with my product pages there seems to be a troll in action – The Navigation labels changed to 15 random numbers(!?). WordPress is keeping the Title attribute, and I cannot find any reason to why it happens with some Menu Labels. I have only three menu items (Home, Shop and About).

In my research I can see that the random numbers for the Navigation labels are created when I choose “Add to menu” for any new menu items (except the first item that is a static link). When choosing Save menu, the items again changed to a random number …

Further research shows that not all menu items are making noise with random numbers for Navigation labels … sometimes the main items is affected, and sometimes the sub menu items are affected.

I removed the menu and built it up again with the same problem. There was not a large menu originally – and I shortened it down. See https://studentskylt1.se/ where the Om oss (About us) > Villkor (Terms), sub menu Navigation label is changed to a random number.

Thank you for your kind help and suggestions.

    Best regards,

I have what I would consider a very basic menu, no sub menus just five or six pages. The problem seems to be exactly like hisol99 described. I have not resolved the random naming issue in wordpress and would really like some insight into what could be causing it. I did however there is a simple workaround in the short term if you need to change the names hisol99. You can simply update the post names in the database. They are saved as a post the post type is nav_menu_item or something like that you will be able to tell what ones they are. You can update the name there and its saves in wordpress and holds the name. Problem is every time I hit save in the wordpress admin screen the names are regenerated to random numbers.

I am also having this issue and do not have many menu items. What theme are you using? I am using Quark.

It was so random – I just deleted a menu item and everything turned into numbers. I migrated things to a testing site: https://www.matthewgrossmann.com. You can see the issue with the menu there.

Workaround that is working ok for me: Instead of creating Menu elements from “Pages”, instead use “Custom Links”. This did not generate the random numbers.

Out of curiosity – Is anyone else using the Yoast SEO premium plugin? I noticed that as soon as I added items to a menu, Yoast SEO said that I “deleted a post URL”. Maybe this is related to what’s happening??

I am running Yoast as well, might want to try deactivating it and see if that resolves the issue. This issues seems to be fixed for me as of right now, although I didn’t change anything since my earlier posts here. I will keep digging and post here if I find anything out.

Also, some instances seemed to work for me late yesterday. I noticed that if I tried to name the menu item the same as the original, it often resulted in the random number being generated.
