menu only filters by parent menu item category

I recently installed this them and the accompanying plugin on a site I’m building for a Japanese Steakhouse.

I would very much like to attach multiple menu item types to a menu item, and then filter by any of those types on the menu page. Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem to be working.

When I click on an item to filter the menu, it seems to randomly filter by the parent on some menu items and the sub-category on other menu items.

How can I fix this?
