Menu page permalink changes About and Find Us pages permalinks

    Hi there!

    I’m looking for some help for my clients website as an issue occurs with permalinks about once a week.

    The website has 5 pages with a link structure like this:

    • Home
    • About – this-is-the-about-page
    • Menu – this-is-the-menu-page
    • Find Us – this-is-the-find-us-page
    • Careers – this-is-the-careers-page

    Each pages permalink had been updated in line with Rank Math SEO guidance and all was fine.

    However I checked my clients website today and come across 404’s from internal links.

    The About page and Find Us page now have the link for the Menu page but with -2 and -3.

    For example:

    • About – this-is-the-menu-page-2
    • Menu – this-is-the-menu-page
    • Find Us – this-is-the-menu-page-3

    I haven’t changed these links to be like this. I understand where duplicate info can cause this but I can’t understand how the Menu link can override the About page and Find Us page links.

    Other things to note, as there is no blog, there’s just Pages and Media Library items. The environment is up to date

    I’m going to check through my Media Library to ensure there’s no duplication going on there too but some advice on this would be great!

    Thank you for contacting the support.

    If the permalinks are changed then someone must have changed them manually. Our plugin doesn’t have any option to automatically change the slug of a page or post. If your client’s site has an activity log then you can check it to figure out how the slugs were changed.

    Thanks for your reply, however as I’m the only one who is working on that website, I haven’t manually changed any of the URL’s to these.

    Since returning them to their correct URL, the problem hasn’t come back, however I’m working on another clients website with Rank Math SEO and the same thing has happened on there as well.

    The website is still in the development stage but I just checked and the same thing has occurred on a couple of pages on that website too.

    I want to be sure that I am correctly setting the Permalinks in the first place. I set the permalink via the Edit Snippet section but I also have the option to see and change the slug via Pages > Quick Edit > Slug.

    If changes are made to the Slug via Quick Edit, does this auto update the Permalink in the Rank Math SEO section? Or is this bad practice?

    The slug will be changed in our snippet editor once you change it using the quick edit. This isn’t a bad practice and you can use it as it saves time.
