That would be the Social Links menu.

If you go to Appearance->Menus, then find what menu you have set to the Social Links menu and remove it from that menu.

The Social Links menu is intended for you to post Custom Link to various platforms, like Twitter, Facebook, etc. What you do is make a menu with those custom links, add it to the Social Links menu, and those icons will automatically become the icons for the relevant link. The bird for Twitter, the F for Facebook, etc.

It should not be displaying in a bulleted list format though, so you might have some Custom CSS interfering there.

I don’t have Social Links menu under menu’s.
No plugins enabled, no custom CSS.

Something on the server might be causing this? SSL issue or something like that?

No, you’re misunderstanding. This isn’t a plugin. This isn’t any custom CSS. This is built in.

It’s a menu that is creating those icons. A normal WordPress “Menu”. The theme has “social menu” support, where it turns one specific type of normal Menu into a social menu. Where the Custom Links become icons that link to social media sites.

Go to Appearance->Menus. One of the menus is called the “Social Links Menu”. That one is what is creating those link icons.

When you look at your menus, click the “location” tab to see what menu is assigned to “social links”. You can then edit that menu and put in the appropriate links to your social media sites.

You need to add a Social menu? Ok, I now understand the issue. Weird that the new theme is not usable for folk who don’t want to show any social links. A strange limitation.

If you don’t add a social links menu, then that menu should not appear.

I think what happened was that you switched from another theme to TwentyNineteen. When you switch themes, WordPress tries to preserve your old menus from the old theme and maps them to new menus in the new theme. It doesn’t always get it right.

So, you may have some old menu that got slotted into the social links menu space. You can go edit that menu and untick the checkbox to remove it from that space.

Yes if I deselect the social menu, so non is selected, the menu is still visible.

Hide the menu via CSS and/or assign no menu to that location.

However, looking at https://marcoraaphorst.nl/, I don’t see it.

am not using the theme at the moment. yeah probably need to hide the menu via CSS
